A treat for fans, the programme includes footage of that Albert Hall performance of the Cure’s Lovesong and Skyfall at the 2013 Oscars. Much of this sequel to Deutschland 83 has taken place far away from Europe, as exiled Martin (Jonas Nay) and his aunt Leonora (Maria Schrader) wheel and arms-deal their way around Africa. Documentaries about mobsters are often cheap and tawdry but this four-parter is an opulent affair in keeping with the lifestyle of its subject. This compelling intelligence yarn about the rivalry between the CIA and the FBI in their supposed joint effort to combat al-Qaida takes a thrilling turn as Chesney interrogates the Nairobi embassy bomber. Bumbling CIA operative Martin Schmidt soon rumbles John O’Neill’s FBI plant but then goes on to make a big mistake. MB
