Silken-voiced and impossibly smooth, Teddy Pendergrass was one of the biggest stars of soul music in the 1970s – first as lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and then as a solo act. This celebratory documentary charts his rise in the gangster-ridden Philadelphia music scene before a tragic car accident in 1982 left him quadriplegic and suicidal.
