Best TV shows on TV tonight

Race Across the World, 9 pm, BBC One

Each week, the teams taking part in this epic race across Canada have been given the location of their next checkpoint as they’re about to leave the previous one. But this week is different – it’s the final leg, and they’ve known all along that the ‘finishing line’ will be St John’s, Newfoundland.

Now, exhausted from the efforts of the previous weeks, and with seriously depleted budgets, they’re setting off from Nova Scotia in a last race to the end, with the winners taking £20,000. But with everyone on their own ‘journey’, either as individuals or pairs, this has always been about much more than money. Don’t miss the reunion later tonight (10.40pm, times vary).

Natural History Museum: World of Wonder, 8 pm, Channel 5

The wry tones of narrator Bill Nighy welcome us back to London’s Natural History Museum for a second behind-the-scenes peek at some of its 80 million artefacts going back four billion years. Among them is the Winchcombe meteorite, the first meteorite to be recovered in the UK for 30 years. It’s making space expert Ashley very excited. So is Cassius – a young dinosaur researcher who is scanning the 80-million-year-old tooth of a Gorgosaurus. And Erica, who is searching for a new insect species.

Queen Cleopatra, Netflix

Narrated and produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, this four-part docudrama series delves deeper into the story of Queen Cleopatra, going beyond her well-documented relationships with Marc Antony and Julius Caesar. Adele James plays Cleopatra, while former EastEnders actors John Partridge and Michael Greco play Julius Caesar and the eunuch Pothinus, the queen’s brother and co-ruler, respectively.

The series also features historians who explain why Cleopatra is one of the most famous, powerful and misunderstood women in the world, and they dig into her heritage, which has been widely debated. A real eye-opener in historical terms!

Kids, 9 pm, Channel 4

With the number of children in care set to reach record numbers in the next decade and the pressures on the system permanently in the news, documentary-maker Paddy Wivell follows the stories of six young people in this three-part series, hearing from foster carers, social workers and parents. Annabelle, 19, is pregnant and determined to break the cycle after being in care since she was five, while Xorin, who has been living in care in Wales after getting mixed up with a drug gang, is reunited with his mum Kelly. Sobering and shocking.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton StoryNetflix

We’ve all fallen in love with the scurrilous court gossip of Bridgerton in recent years, and now we get a chance to find out how the colourful and competitive world of ‘the Ton’ came to be in this six-part spin-off. Set decades before the main drama, this prequel tells the story of the 17-year-old Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) and her bittersweet romance with husband King George III (Corey Mylchreest). It’s an intimate glimpse into a lavish world and unmissable viewing for Bridgerton fans.
