Best TV shows on TV tonight

Annika, 9.15 pm, BBC One/iPlayer (box set)

Lead detectives in crime dramas are usually solemn, haunted souls. Not DI Annika Strandhed (Nicola Walker) in this acclaimed series, first shown on Alibi. She’s so approachable she chats directly to viewers during her investigations. As a result, there’s a distinctly wry sense of humour in this opener, as Annika – head of Glasgow’s newly minted Marine Homicide Unit – occasionally breaks away from
the inquiry into the death of a man found harpooned through the head to talk to us about Moby-Dick or her teenage daughter. Imagine Vera mixed with a much less saucy Fleabag, and you’re on the right lines… A second series is due this year.

Casualty, 8.25 pm, BBC One

Tonight, Jodie is looking forward to a fun night out, but instead falls prey to a predator… The chilling events unfold while Jodie (Anna Chell) waits alone for Rida at a bar, only to realise she’s been drugged by seemingly nice-guy Noah, who bundles the disoriented nurse out of the club and into his car. Slipping in and out of consciousness, Jodie fights tooth and nail, but Noah is ruthless and relentless. Can she escape her evil attacker? Elsewhere, Faith gets unsettling news from the police, which may push her to the brink, while Teddy accidentally gets tangled in a love triangle.

The King's Grandchildren, 9.20 pm, Channel 5

You will probably have gathered by now that if you want your Saturday evening to have a royal flavour, then Channel 5 is the place to be. So, following a shift in The Royal Kitchen: Upstairs, Downstairs earlier (8.20 pm), here’s tonight’s main course: a look at King Charles III’s role as a grandparent (and step-grandfather to Camilla’s own grandchildren). He’s known as ‘Grandpa Wales’ to William’s three youngsters, George, Charlotte and Louis, as well as Harry’s two children, Archie and Lilibet – but what does it mean to grow up with a king for a grandfather in this day and age?

Reel Stories: The Pet Shop Boys, 9.05 pm, BBC Two

Enjoy some pure pop nostalgia as Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe look back at classic footage of their Pet Shop Boys career with host Dermot O’Leary. And there are some brilliant videos, including their rather awkward first TV performance on ITV’s Poparound in 1985, Chris’ 1995 cameo appearance on Neighbours and their epic 2010 Glastonbury gig! But there are also some moments of reflection, as Neil talks about the single the duo released in 1987 in the middle of the AIDS crisis, It’s a Sin, and the many friends he lost to the disease. Pet Shop Boys at the BBC airs earlier (7.35 pm), and there’s another chance to see their 2019 concert Live in Hyde Park (10.35 pm).

Best box set on TV tonight

Sorry for Your Loss, ITVX

Elizabeth Olsen cemented her reputation as a seriously talented actor in this smart drama about the unexpected effects of grief, first shown on Facebook Watch. It’s one of many US dramas that have been added to ITVX recently. She plays widow Leigh, who moves back in with her sparky mother Amy (a wonderful Janet McTeer) after the death of her husband Matt (Mamoudou Athie). As the two series progress, she attempts to deal with her difficult relationship with her sister, a growing attraction to her brother-in-law and the realisation that she didn’t know her partner at all.

★★★★ NT

Best film on TV tonight

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Disney Plus

The latest saga for Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man sees him sucked into the Quantum Realm, along with Evangeline Lilly, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Douglas and Kathryn Newton. How do they get home and, crucially, what’s up with Jonathan Majors’ all-conquering despot Kang? For a while, the film is aimlessly drunk on the glowing CGI potential of its strange world outside time and space, but gradually the story finds its stride. Rudd summons previously untapped reserves of dramatic clout, while Newton and Pfeiffer are well deployed.
