To mark the 25th anniversary of the shooting, Lorraine Kelly – who reported from the scene for GMTV – returns to the town to talk to survivors and relatives of the victims. She finds sadness but also resilience: in subsequent years, the people of Dunblane have campaigned for changes to British gun laws and offered support to those affected by school shootings in the US. Spielberg’s screen version of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer winner about a black woman’s struggle for identity in the prewar south gave Whoopi Goldberg her first major role. It’s a memorable performance, as if she were infused with the heroine’s own indomitable will. Paul Howlett
