Murder of the Essex Boys: Blood and Betrayal

10pm, Channel 4
“There was a lot of people queueing to waste them.” Former criminals and detectives share what they know about the “Range Rover murders”, when, in 1995, drug dealers Pat Tate, Tony Tucker and Craig Rolfe were shot dead at point-blank range in their 4x4 in Essex. There have been two convictions and plentiful conspiracies about the case – and it inspired the movie franchise Rise of the Footsoldier. But, as this two-part documentary shows, it’s still not clear what exactly happened. Hollie Richardson

Canal Boat Diaries

7pm, U&Yesterday
Robbie Cumming’s self-filmed, defiantly low-key odyssey continues, taking him along the Llangollen Canal on the England/Wales border, then up the River Weaver in Cheshire. Big dramas this week include an air vent that needs re-gluing and a trip to Middlewich to buy underpants. Jack Seale

Springwatch

It’s that time of year again, with Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan starting the series at their new base at the National Trust’s Crom estate in Northern Ireland. Elsewhere, Iolo Williams is reporting live from the Knepp estate in West Sussex. What will be their first wildlife sightings? HR

Lucy Worsley Investigates: The American Revolution

9pm, BBC Two
The concluding part of this cerebral exploration into Britain’s brutal 18th-century breakup from its North American colonies. Charming historian Lucy Worsley tells the story of the battle over New York’s Long Island, then digs into the “almost surreal” reasons why a vengeful Louis XVI of France bankrolled America’s revolt against the British monarchy. Nicole Vassell

Major Crimes Unit

9pm, Channel 5
A targeted shooting, carried out in broad daylight and possibly connected to organised crime, lands in the in-tray of the unit. A race against time ensues as the team use CCTV to try to match the suspects in custody to the vehicle on camera before the window for bringing charges closes. Phil Harrison

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

9pm, Sky Witness
The funeral of a beloved character makes for a sombre opening to season 27 of this long-running procedural spin-off. But soon the SVU group are working on a challenging rape case, made even trickier when they realise a vital witness is wanted by ICE. Graeme Virtue

Robot Dreams (Pablo Berger, 2023), 4.35pm, Film4

The song September, by Earth, Wind & Fire, will never sound the same again after you’ve seen Pablo Berger’s poignant animation. In a 1980s New York populated solely by animals, a lonely dog buys a robot and finds the pal he needs for rollerskating in the park (to September) and trips to the seaside. But when his metal mate seizes up on the amusement park beach on the last day of the season, the canine has to abandon it. The ebbs and flows of friendship are played out in the robot’s musical fantasies as it rusts there. Simon Wardell
