Inspired by the lives of his parents, Paweł Pawlikowski crafts a melancholy tale of love during the cold war. Shot in moody monochrome, it opens in rural, communist Poland in 1949, where Tomasz Kot’s pianist Wiktor is smitten by Joanna Kulig’s young singer Zula; their relationship soon stretches across borders.
