Helgoland 513

10pm, Sky Atlantic

In this meaty seven-part German dystopian drama, it is 2036 and Helgoland is the island on which a small community of survivors are trapped as the apocalypse destroys the world around them. The safe haven can only hold 513 inhabitants – so the group of rebels preparing to conquer it are a bit of a problem, along with navigating social rankings and staying alive with limited resources. Beyond Paradise

8pm, BBC One

Another series of the slightly mundane crime drama begins and there’s a problem for DI Goodman (Kris Marshall) as a murder-mystery play results in a real-life homicide at which he, a particularly dozy detective, was present. Elsewhere, to the unease of her daughter Martha (Sally Bretton), Barbara Flynn’s Anne has discovered dating apps. Phil Harrison

Gardeners’ World

8pm, BBC Two

Growing season is upon us, so settle back and let Monty Don show you how to plant dahlia tubers for a riotous display of nonstop summer colour. Elsewhere, the no-dig method takes the spotlight – and anyone plagued by heavy winds will be inspired by one man’s storm-resilient garden, too. Kayleigh Dray

Travel Man: 48 Hours in Trieste

8.30pm, Channel 4

Fresh from campaigning about sewage leakages, Joe Lycett is back on his travels, starting the new series with Alan Davies in Trieste, north-eastern Italy. From watching farting show horses to getting hammered on strong coffee, exploring “donated wind” at the Bora Museum and painting, it’s a joyful romp around town. HR

RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK Versus the World

9pm, BBC Three

Season two of the intercontinental catfight reaches its penultimate episode and welcomes Katherine Ryan as guest coach and judge. Drawing on her skill at delivering withering putdowns, Ryan helps the remaining queens launch laser-targeted shade at a wedding-themed comedy roast. But who is playing the happy couple? Graeme Virtue

How to With John Wilson

11.05pm, BBC Two

The fantastically weird documentary series ends its third and final season with a double bill on how to watch birds and how to track your package. When meeting the lovely birdwatching community (“If you say you saw something, others will just … believe you”), he uncovers “swallowgate”, a scandal that violated the birders’ code of ethics. HR

Film choice

Shirley (John Ridley, 2024), Netflix
This biopic of the inspirational Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to the US congress, focuses not on that 1968 victory but her equally groundbreaking 1972 run for the US presidency. The always impressive Regina King dominates the screen as the Brooklyn politician who hates politicking, and is single-minded, bordering on obstinate even, as her campaign for the Democratic nomination fails to gain traction. It’s a largely down-the-line tale but, along with the recent Rustin, is another chapter in Black history that deserves an airing. Simon Wardell
