Before launching her TV career, Sandi Toksvig earned a degree in archaeology. This fascinating series sees her returning to her academic roots, joining a dig in Dorset. There’s an iron age cemetery to be unearthed and, somewhat troublingly, some secrets about human sacrifice to be revealed. PH
Bettany Hughes’ Lost Worlds: Dawn of Civilisations

For her latest historical adventure Hughes heads to Turkey to explore the legacy of ancient Anatolia, a region that “left its mark on every era of human history”. Highlights include the otherworldly Cappadocia and the spectacular architecture of a 13th-century mosque. Graeme Virtue
Elvis, the Colonel and the Mob

Blame it on Colonel Tom Parker but Elvis Presley’s links to organised crime were, according to this two-part documentary, surprisingly strong. Parker was a denizen of Las Vegas and, along with taking care of Elvis’s business, he forged a few shady connections. Eventually, as this film shows, this court became a mixed blessing for the King. Colin Firth continues to excel in the drama about murder suspect Michael Peterson, despite the production being less essential than the original documentary. In 2003, the Petersons’ son Clayton makes an important discovery; in 2017, Michael’s new partner Sophie considers how meeting him changed her life. Jack Seale
Ghosts Australia

The genius of the Ghosts premise is its adaptability to any cultural context. This Australian version is a case in point, this week touching on issues around colonisation but with the lightest and wittiest of touches. In the present, Kate and Sean handle an invasion of their own as the odious neighbours turn up. PH

Just before his latest twisty film, Bitter Christmas, hits cinemas, here’s another chance to see Pedro Almodóvar’s equally knotty 2021 drama, which explores family secrets in the domestic and national spheres. It features a standout performance from Penélope Cruz as photographer Janis, who gets pregnant by a forensic anthropologist investigating the forgotten civil war victims of Franco – including her ancestors. When her newborn gets swapped with that of the young Ana (Milena Smit), fate intertwines their lives. A forceful experience. Simon Wardell
