TV star perfectly sums up hangover change as you get older in one viral photo

People told you this day of reckoning would come, but you didn't believe them.

Well who's laughing now?

There was once a time when, after a heavy night, you could laugh off a hangover and get on with your day, fresh faced and full of beans.

Now you're old and a hangover is something to be feared.

One Dublin TV star has perfectly summed up the hangover change as you get older in one simple photo that's gone viral.

Daithi from Virgin Media's Gogglebox Ireland said: "A hangover in your 30s, as told by Apple Health."

The pic shows Daithi clocking up an impressive 21,000 steps on Saturday followed by a "did you even get out of bed" step score of 665 on Sunday after a night of drinking on Saturday evening.

Why do hangovers get worse as you grow up?

Firstly, the escalation of hangover misery is NOT in your head. They really do get worse with age.

It's because,  Business Insider  reports, your body has become less efficient at breaking down alcohol.

This means there's a chemical left in the body, called acetaldehyde.

Acetaldehyde is the nasty responsible for those headaches and the feeling of nausea.

Just to pile another layer of bad news on, you've also gained body fat. Partly because we all gain fat as we get older.

And if you think being larger means you can handle alcohol better, think again.

Fat can't absorb alcohol, meaning there's less space for it to diffuse.

Another reason why hangovers get worse is owing to a decrease in body water content, which leaves concentrated alcohol in your system for longer.
