TV's Mary Berry slammed as she claims to have never eaten a takeaway meal

Telly baking queen Mary Berry has stirred up a storm by claiming: “I have never had a takeaway, why should I?”

The kitchen doyen claims people should go back to basics and make their own meals.

Mary, a former Great British Bake Off judge and host of the Best Home Cook, has underlined her disdain for food-to-go.

The 84-year-old said: “We want to get people cooking at home because we are a nation that orders in and eats out.”

But she was criticised last night for not trying takeaway food.

Tim and Kelly Barnes run Krispies at Exmouth in Devon, which was voted the UK’s best fish and chip shop last year. Kelly, who’s been frying fish for 20 years, said: “Fish, chips and mushy peas is a wholesome meal. You can’t make great fish and chips at home.

“For a start, potatoes should never go below 5C. Mary should come along and give it a go.

“But it’s a bit unfair to say we’re a nation that orders in as times have changed and people just don’t have the time to cook at home.”

Joe Groves, of home delivery food firm Deliveroo, said: “We would like Mary to know that takeaway does not have to mean kebabs or burgers – we’d love to sort her out with a meal from one of our gourmet partners.”

A Just Eat spokesperson added: “We offer a diverse range of over 100 cuisine types – from grilled chicken, vegan and vegetarian to traditional curries, sushi or pizza.”

Mary presents Best Home Cook with Claudia Winkleman on Thursdays on BBC One.
