TV REVIEW: We get all parental with spin-off show 'How I Met Your Father'

Some may argue we didn’t need a How I Met Your Mother spin-off show, but this nostalgic charm-fest earns the right to exist.

As a framing device, in the year 2050, Sophie (Kim Cattrall), recounts to her unseen son the events that followed her younger self (Hilary Duff) meeting his dad.

Show creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger are no stranger to strong TV work ( This Is Us , Love Victor ).

The series runs for 10 episodes with a few nods and Easter eggs to the original, culminating in a cameo from one of the earlier show’s main cast, who gives Sophie advice in the predecessor group’s hangout, MacLaren’s Pub .

Sophie begins the season having been on 87 Tinder dates that year alone and heading out to another potential romance.

She lives with best friend Valentina (Francia Rasia) who has very recently fell for posh Brit Charlie (Tom Ainsley) who relocates to New York to be with her.

By chance she meets Jesse (Christopher Lowell) and Sid (Suraj Sharma), along with Jesse’s half-sister, the quirky Ellen (Tien Tran), and together the sextet become the main characters.

Plot points outside of the who-is-your-father storyline include Valentina and Charlie’s whirlwind romance, Sid and long distance girlfriend Hannah’s (Ashley Reyes) relationship, Jesse and Ellen’s sibling reconnection, Jesse’s embarrassing YouTube-filmed proposal fail with his ex-girlfriend and Ellen wanting to get back on the lesbian dating scene after a marriage break-up.

With mentions to a lot of cultural references and a modern dating theme, the series feels very up-to-date.

Sophie reveals she met her son’s father at a party that everyone she dated throughout the season and all of her new male friends attended so, with shaky relationships on Sid and Charlie’s part, as well as a chemistry with aspiring musician Jesse , the question of who Sophie’s true love is remains open to interpretation throughout.

How I Met Your Father takes a little while to get going, but now all the characters are more developed and it has been renewed for a second season, it is definitely an entertaining show to swipe right on.
