TV pundits weigh in on refereeing controversies from 3-3 draw between Preston North End and Bristol City

It is a pity that after a stunning 3-3 draw between Bristol City and Preston North End at Deepdale on Saturday the post-match discussions continue to be about the key decisions made by referee Andy Davies.

After the final whistle Robins head coach Lee Johnson said: "I thought the game was run by a set of officials who weren’t on their game today," while some City fans called the officials performance a disgrace.

City scored through Taylor Moore, Andi Weimann and Nathan Baker while the hosts netted twice from the penalty spot through Paul Gallagher and Daniel Johnson before Patrick Bauer ensured the points were shared with a goal in the 70th minute.

On the EFL on Quest TV highlights programme last night pundits Michael Appleton, the new Lincoln City manager, and former winger tuned coach Gary McSheffrey continued the discussions.

Appleton was not convinced either of Bristol City's first two goals should have been allowed to stand, he said: "The second one is interesting. Johnson is marking on the inside and he is the one who knocks the goalkeeper over.

"I think the first goal should have been cancelled out."

Gary McSheffrey added: "I think the first goal is a foul. Moore is pinning the keeper with his right arm. A couple more players get involved and then the ball falls to Moore and he knocks it into an open goal.

"Moore is standing his ground on the second one. One should have been disallowed and one given."

There was more controversy to come. Famara Diedhiou had a late goal disallowed in the final 10 minutes and there were plenty who thought there was a foul on Nathan Baker as Preston defender Bauer headed in a late equaliser for the home side.

Discussing the Preston equaliser, Gary McSheffrey said: "He (Bauer) gets up early and is salmon like with that but he is gaining some hang-time from having two hands on the shoulder of the defender. For me it could have been disallowed."
