TV pundit reckons he's got the perfect solution to sorting out Joelinton's goal-drought

Allan Saint-Maximin could be the answer to Newcastle United's current goal-drought - according to former Coventry striker Noel Whelan.

With Joelinton struggling to adapt to the Premier League - having scored only one goal in the league since his £40 million move from Hoffenhiem - Whelan wants to see Newcastle's head coach Steve Bruce turn to Saint-Maximin.

"Saint-Maximin is the one that looks the most dangerous in that side,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“You need to take Joelinton out of there and bang him through the middle – hurt people with his pace. Something a little bit different because I look at Joelinton and I am not sure what he is giving them.

“What is he going to provide that is going to get them further up the table? I cannot see him hitting 20 goals a season for them.

“They need a hungry player with desire. You need to be busting your gut to get into the box and he was not.”

Against Norwich City earlier this month, Bruce was left without a recognised striker on the pitch after Joelinton was subbed off.

There was some confusion over who was up-front - Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almiron or Saint-Maximin.

Given Saint-Maximin likes to pick the ball up, run into space and then cut inside - a shift to a centre-forward role, seems unlikely.
