TV presenter Darren Kennedy says Normal People reminds him of his first love as a teenager

Fashionista Darren Kennedy says Normal People reminds him of his first love as a teenager.

The TV personality, 39, who is currently single, also joked the show made him feel “hopeless” in the romance department at the minute.

It was the series that caught the eyes and imaginations at home and away, bringing in record numbers of viewers for both RTE and the BBC.

And speaking from his home in Dublin, Darren, who is currently working on a new BBC show, told the Dublin Live: “I loved it but it made me feel hopeless.

“I binge-watched the whole thing, oh my god.

“It’s a beautiful story and it reminded me of my own, well there were elements of it that reminded me of my own teenage years, first girlfriends and that sort of thing.

“But it is an excellent show and I am so delighted to have seen it get the recognition that it has.

“Lenny Abrahamson and the cast, I just loved everything about it.”

And with all eyes and attention on Paul Mescal’s character Connell Waldron’s chain and GAA shorts since the show aired, fashion icon Darren insists he was way ahead of the trend.

He laughed: “And the chain. And the GAA shorts.

“It’s so funny because I do these weekly cocktails on a Saturday and I wear a very small chain from Irish designer Chupi.

“I’ve been wearing it for about two years and it’s funny since Connell’s thing people are saying, ‘Oh I see you’ve added the chain’.

“But it’s always been there, I never take it off. But it’s like this heightened sensibility now to this little piece of metal around your neck, it’s hilarious.”

Meanwhile, Darren is to take to the screen once again for the next few weeks in You Are What You Wear. He said he’s confident the new show is exactly what people need right now.

Taking part as one of five stylists, alongside Rylan Clark-Neal, the aim of the show is to help people feel great from the outside in.

Darren said: “There’s only so many repeats channels can put out and I think there is a silver lining there for You Are What You Wear because it is a fresh new show and fashion in a new decade.”
