TV outage in County Durham as firefighters tackle large mast fire in North Yorkshire Moors

Homes across County Durham have been left without television reception after a fire engulfed a 314-meter high transmitter.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service say they have sent crews from Helmsley, Thirsk, Danby and Coulby Newham to deal with the blaze.

The Bilsdale signal mast on moorland above Helmsley, North Yorkshire caught fire on Tuesday afternoon.

The mast is primarily used for radio and television transmission and is among the most powerful in the UK, Teesside Live reports.

It provides signals to parts of North Yorkshire, Teesside and County Durham and hundreds of households have lost their TV reception this afternoon as a result of the fire.

A FreeView outage is being reported across County Durham on social media.

On Twitter, a spokesperson for the Freeview service said: "Due to unforeseen circumstances the Bilsdale transmitter is currently not transmitting due to a large fire.

"The emergency services are onsite and once cleared the engineers will access the transmitter to resolve the issue.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
