TV on DVD: 'The Shield'; 'The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling'

'THE SHIELD: COMPLETE SERIES' (Blu-ray). Best drama series ever? This 88-episode sleeper (2002-2008) "formed the DNA" of FX as a fearless basic-cable innovator. Strutting lead Michael Chiklis remade his career, transforming himself from "Commish" cuddliness to hard-body intensity, leading a police "strike team" through shocking twists of both crime-fighting and lawbreaking. Watch as Walton Goggins shoots to stardom, CCH Pounder provides "moral voice," season-long guest stars Glenn Close and Forest Whitaker mesmerize. Shot grimy on L.A.'s meaner streets, the show's handheld rawness gets a great in-your-face HD upgrade here, while retaining its trailblazing DVD extras _ dozens of commentaries packed with DIY film school detail (led by series creator Shawn Ryan), wide-ranging production documentaries, so much more. Great new goodies include a rollicking cast reunion hour, writers' panel, "don't compromise" retrospective. Binge-worthy in every way. List price: $230 for 18 jam-packed Blu-ray Discs, out this week from Mill Creek.

'THE ZEN DIARIES OF GARRY SHANDLING.' Judd Apatow directs this intimate portrait of his friend the late "Larry Sanders" comic, with bonus commentary, Paley Center interview, comedy club backstage fun, club set, more; $20 DVD/$25 Blu, HBO.
