TV Newsance 316: Poison in cough syrup, satsang on primetime

This week on TV Newsance, we talk about the most horrifying tragedy in Madhya Pradesh, where over 20 children died due to a poisonous cough syrup. A medicine to cure cough contained an alarming amount of a chemical used in brake fluid and antifreeze.

Why is it always the poor who suffer because of a negligent system?  This is not the first time this has happened; India witnessed a tragedy due to poisonous cough syrup in 2022 as well.

Back to Madhya Pradesh. While grieving parents were selling their land to save their children, primetime news was busy debating “which Hindu god has the biggest fan following” and “whether Lord Vishnu would approve of shoe-throwing.”

This week, a lawyer hurled a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, citing an insult to Lord Vishnu. What followed on TV? Not outrage against hate or threats to the judiciary, but a primetime satsang, complete with Vishnu analogies, god charts, and spiritual justification for crime.

Also in this episode:

  • How hate-mongers openly incite violence and still face zero consequences.

  • How India’s drug regulation system continues to fail its poorest citizens.

  • Devendra Fadnavis’ viral orange-eating technique (you can’t unsee it).
