TV licence change deadline leaving thousands of people facing £1,000 fine

The BBC will end its licence fee grace period for over-75s on July 31 who face being fined up to £1,000 if they don't get a licence to watch TV.

Free TV licences for over-75s were axed last year, except for those who claim pension credit, as part of a major shake-up.

However, a transition period was announced due to the coronavirus pandemic, saving anyone who couldn’t afford a TV licence just yet from being fined.

This grace period will finish on Saturday, July 31, which means anyone who hasn’t paid for a TV licence, but needs one, could soon be subject to a penalty.

In an update at the end of June this year, the BBC said 3.6 million of the 3.9 million people over-75 who needed to pay for a new TV licence had already done so.

A TV licence costs £159 (£53.50 for black and white TV sets) for both homes and businesses.

Free over 75 TV licences are only available to households that receive Pension Credit.

If you do need a licence, and you haven't paid for one, you could face prosecution plus a fine of up to £1,000.

A TV licence is needed to watch or record live programmes on any channel, or if you're watching something live on a streaming service.

You can watch content after it's been shown on television - for example on services such as, but not limited to, ITV Player, All 4, My5, Now TV, Netflix or Apple TV.

You can also watch video clips that aren't live through YouTube.

But you can't download or watch BBC programmes on BBC iPlayer without a licence – live, catch up or on demand.
