TV legend Gay Byrne forced to miss wife's book launch due to infection

Irish TV legend Gay Byrne was forced to miss his wife, Kathleen's book launch last night as he is currently battling an infection.

The former Late Late Show host is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

And the it seems treatment has taken its toll on his wellbeing.

Speaking to The Irish Daily Star Kathleen Watkins said that husband Byrne couldn't make the launch of her new book The Ordinary Woman and Other Poems due to an 'infection'.

She said: "He has an infection. A number of my friends can't be here either.

"It's very strange being here without him."

But she remained optimistic that the 85-year-old will make a swift recovery.

"He's not good today unfortunately but we shall overcome. He's taking the antibiotics."

Byrne was first diagnosed with cancer in 2016 and has since taken a step away from broadcasting as he receives treatment for his illness.

Watkins earlier revealed that she believes he won't be returning to RTE any time soon.

She told The Sunday Independent "I can't see that happening at this time,"

"It was some career he had, we have all that memorabilia, a pile of stuff. But life goes on and other people take over

"I think it's very difficult to broadcast in this era, because I don't think people are watching television in the same way."

Earlier this year, Byrne received a life time achievement award for his contribution to Irish broadcasting.

However he was unable to pick up the award as he was suffering with a chest infection and broken wrist at the time.
