TV journalist in Kosovo stabbed by man angered by televised report

A man walked into the newsroom of a television station in Kosovo and repeatedly stabbed a journalist in his head and neck as he sat at his desk.

Milot Hasimja, who was working for the private broadcaster Klan Kosova in Pristina, is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Other staff intervened and the perpetrator was detained. It appears that the attack on Monday (27 October) was in retaliation for a report about him by Hasimja.

Some reports suggest that the attacker had previously demanded that a video be removed from YouTube. Police are said to be treating it as a case of attempted murder.

"Attacks such as this are a serious violation of press freedom and cannot be tolerated," said Oliver Vujovic, secretary-general of the South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO).

"In the meantime, we wish Mr Hasimja a speedy recovery."
