TV host Kate McCann faints live on air during British Tory leadership debate

TalkTV was forced to axe its Tory leadership debate after one of its stars fainted live on-air, it has been confirmed.

The broadcaster, owned by News UK, has issued an official statement after a loud crash was heard in the studio, with Conservative candidate Liz Truss seen with her hands over her face to conceal a shocked expression.

Truss could then be heard yelling: "Oh my God!" before the broadcast was unceremoniously yanked off the airwaves.

Viewers caught a glimpse of Liz walking towards McCann before the signal dropped.

TalkTV's statement confirmed: "Kate McCann fainted on air tonight and although she is fine, the medical advice was that we shouldn't continue with the debate. We apologise to our viewers and listeners."

A message was shown on screen reading: "We are sorry for the disruption to this programme.

"We are working hard to fix the issue and will return to normal programming soon."

An initial statement read: "For viewers of tonight's The Sun Showdown, there has been a medical issue. It's not a security issue and the candidates are okay."

It had been suggested that the noise arose from a podium falling over before the comment was released.

It isn't the only drama the debate has faced so far, as Kate was initially primed to present alongside The Sun's political editor Harry Cole before he tested positive for Covid-19.

Cole confirmed earlier on Tuesday (July 26): "Covid finally got me for the first time with spectacularly bad timing."

Journalist Iain Dale commented on the incident via Twitter, writing: "What an awful thing to happen to her on such a big day.

"All credit to Liz Truss for her instant reaction and rushing over to help Kate.

"A shocking moment for everyone watching. as well as those in the studio."

Someone else wished her well on Twitter, writing: "She must be devastated. Hope she is okay."

"Poor Kate. It was very frightening to watch not knowing what was going on, especially the bang and the look of sheer horror on Liz Truss' face. I'm just glad she's ok!" a third viewer wrote.
