Premier League Football: Stoke City v Newcastle United
7pm, Sky Sports 1

Two late goals from Papiss Cissé in Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Hull may have saved Alan Pardew’s hide for the time being but – with the side still winless this season – calls for the Newcastle manager’s sacking are unlikely to subside any time soon. Stoke, meanwhile, are having a curious season: they’re playing a more expansive brand of football than in previous years, and managed a victory at Manchester City, but have otherwise failed to win a game. Horizon: Is Your Brain Male Or Female?
9pm, BBC2

Dr Michael Mosley and Professor Alice Roberts question whether our brains are hard-wired in terms of our gender, or whether it’s a mix of social pressures and nurture that makes us conform. The answer is, as one might expect, far more nuanced than that. Yet there are still some startling discoveries made during an absorbing hour, notably how neural pathways appear to echo our ideas of gender stereotypes, and how much grownups unwittingly force their own notions of gender on children. Ben Arnold

Cilla
9pm, ITV

The No 1s are rolling in but the US is failing to open up to the scouse singer in the final part of this enjoyable biopic. An increasingly hollow-looking Brian Epstein pops pills and disappears for days, infuriating Cilla and enraging her Bobby. Tensions threaten to split them up. Yes, characters often talk in pat exposition but by thunder it’s been a pleasure to watch Sheridan Smith, Ed Stoppard (Epstein) and Aneurin Barnard (Bobby). Bravo. Julia Raeside

24 Hours In Police Custody
9pm, Channel 4

Made by the people who brought us 24 Hours In A&E, this series follows Bedfordshire police as they seek to gather enough evidence to charge the suspects they have arrested within the allotted time. This opener concerns a man on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, with a love triangle having seemingly gone out of control. You might be sceptical of the “truth” a show like this tells, but as a TV procedural it’s brilliant – not least because of our two CID detective leads, a David Brent-like former holiday rep and his ruthless sidekick. David Stubbs

Too Tough To Teach?
9pm, Channel 5

This two-parter visits Ian Mikardo High School in Tower Hamlets, where all pupils have been permanently expelled from mainstream education. What awaits them in east London is an appreciation of the pointlessness of punishing anger, frustration and fear; instead, there is the support that will allow them to learn to control themselves. The sheer aggression on show means at times the school seems overwhelmed by the presence of the unchecked male id, but it’s also clear these teaching techniques are healing ones, too. Rachel Aroesti

Never Mind The Buzzcocks
10pm, BBC2

Despite rock’n’roll being at a bit of a low ebb pop-culturally, the music quiz show forged in the ashes of Britpop still endures, and for this new series now has a new permanent host in Rhod Gilbert. His astonished goofiness is rather different to the acid snark of Mark Lamarr and Simon Amstell before him, but there’s no shortage of whipping boys for potential lampooning: both Professor Green and the 1975’s Matt Healy will no doubt have their mickey not so much taken as kidnapped in this opening episode. Ben Beaumont-Thomas

Glue
10pm, E4

Episode three of the dark teen drama, headed up by a cast of bright young Brits. The travellers make Cal’s funeral a private affair, leaving his friends to deal with their emotions alone. Rob (Rizzle Kicks’ Jordan Stephens) battles his guilt, unsure whether to expose his infidelity to corroborate Janine’s (Faye Marsay) alibi. Meanwhile, Ruth (Yasmin Paige) continues to use her links to both the teens and the travellers to investigate Cal’s death. A heady mix of secret, lies and sex, it’s another winner for E4. Hannah J Davies

Dapper Laughs On The Pull
10.30pm, ITV2

If TV-to-movie transitions aren’t tricky enough, how about extrapolating the medium of six-second Vines into six half-hour television episodes? That’s the challenge afforded here to self-proclaimed “pulling magnet” Dapper Laughs, with his guide for lonely single “lads”. Such a premise seems similar to Dapper’s Vine output, where his undoubted aptitude for compacting comic content is undone by a distasteful tendency to punch downwards. Surely such habits will be tempered on the channel that made Keith Lemon a star. Oh, wait… Mark Jones
