Turning second-hand goods into scholarships

One man's trash is another man's treasure. So let's turn your used stuff into money to support needy students as part of the "Ruam Duay, Chuay Pan" campaign.

A collaborative project between Siam Discovery Exploratorium and the Yuvabadhana Foundation, Club 21 (Thailand) and Masterpiece Organizer, "Ruam Duay, Chuay Pan" ("Joining Hands To Share") aims to provide a space for creativity and inspiration.

The campaign encourages anyone to take part in helping disadvantaged students through supporting the Pankan: Share-rity Room shop located at the Exploratarium, on the M Floor of Siam Discovery, by donating used stuff, putting it on sale instead of just throwing it in a trash bin. All proceeds will go towards scholarships from the Yuvabadhana Foundation.

The campaign runs until Nov 15. Twenty-one scholarships are expected to be awarded to underprivileged kids during the campaign.

The project welcomes unwanted, used stuff in good condition -- from clothes and bags to shoes and accessories. Given that used stuff can be sold and reused, it is also an environmentally-friendly campaign, said Usara Yongpiyakul, chief executive officer to Siam Piwat Retail Holding.

Thapanee Sinadyodharaks, managing director of the Pankan shop, says: "Pankan is a mechanism for creating engagement among people in Thai society in the form of a social enterprise. It allows people to give unwanted items in good condition, sharing products for sale at a reasonable price. It's about turning stuff into an opportunity while bringing benefits and making better changes for society."

The shop is destined to create engagement among people -- those who come to give away their stuff and those who come to share money. That's to say everyone will have an opportunity to grant disadvantaged students scholarships.

The latest Pankan: Share-rity Room at Siam Discovery also showcases stuff given away by celebrities and superstars willing to share kindness.

Their stuff will be part of scholarship fundraising. Among the good-hearted figures are Nadech Kugimiya, Urassaya Sperbund, Jirayu Tangsrisuk, James Ma, Davika Hoorne, Palitchoke Ayanaputra and Charyl Chappuis.

Yuvabadhana Foundation focuses on supporting and improving the lives of underprivileged students. It creates opportunities that allow disadvantaged children to continue their education through secondary school or an equivalent level. The foundation also conducts the Child Development Programme and Teacher Development Programme.
