A woman hears a bizarre hissing noise in her living room, searching up and down for the source. However, by the time she locates it, it’s already smoking.
In a video with over 249,000 views, TikToker Ria (@riawashere) pulls back her living room rug, showing a metal socket in the floor. The socket hisses as it smokes. The floor surrounding the socket is discolored as if it had been burned.
On-screen text reads, “It’s too early for my apartment to be trying to kill me…”
She writes in the caption, “Turned my whole living room upside down because I thought I was hearing things and losing my mind.”
Why was the electric socket smoking and making noise?
In a follow-up video, Ria says she heard the noise for a few days before discovering the source.
“Maintenance came in here and they said that there was actually water in [the socket],” she explains, holding up a vacuum tube attached to the socket. “They’ve been sucking all the water out of here.”
She says she did not call the fire department and instead asked maintenance to check on the issue before she evacuated from her apartment.
“Thank goodness this thing didn’t take me out in my sleep,” she says.
What should others do in this situation?
In the comments, viewers suggest steps others should take to prevent a fire from breaking out if a socket starts smoking in their home.
“When that happens, run to the breaker, turn off the power, healthy. No power, no heat, no heat, no fire then called the fire department, then your electrician and landlord. If you are renting,” one writes.
“FLIP YOUR BRAKERS OFF (ONE AT A TIME) and call the fire department. I hope your ok,” another suggests.
“Go ahead and contact an insurance company for renters insurance while you’re at it,” a third says.
Others share similar experiences with dangerous electrical issues.
“No ma’am. call the fire department. my old apartment building got condemned because of a situation similar to this,” a commenter shares.
“My house had the smell for days. Days. We were thinking it was a dead animal we couldn’t find…. It was electric,” another writes.
“I’ve seen these explode bro while working at a university!!! keep everything away/ turn off from the main power switch,” a third says.
“I’m so glad you’re safe. My neighbor lost her mom this way,” a fourth adds.
