'Turned down' - Wayne Rooney breaks silence on Everton approach for manager job

Wayne Rooney has revealed he turned down an approach to be interviewed for the Everton manager's job as the club's search for a permanent appointment draws to a close.

The Blues are soon expected to make a final decision on who will become Rafa Benitez's successor, with Duncan Ferguson, Frank Lampard and Vitor Pereira understood to be the final three candidates under consideration.

Rooney was heavily linked with the position after making a positive impression at Championship side Derby County, but has reiterated his loyalty to the Rams.

Determined to continue his commitment of steering Derby to safety, the 36-year-old said: "Everton approached my agent and asked me to interview for the job. But I turned it down.

"I believe I will be a Premier League manager and am ready for that 100%. But I have a job at Derby, which is important to me."

The former Blues striker has been battling a number of off-field issues at Pride Park since taking the reins in 2020, having been docked 21 points during the current campaign as well as facing the threat of liquidation.

His side are eight points adrift of safety as it stands as they attempt to complete what would be one of the greatest turnarounds witnessed in English football.
