Turnbull 'very confident' of winning next election

The Coalition has trailed Labor in the last 18 opinion polls conducted by Newspoll.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has declared the Coalition will win the next election despite being behind in the opinion polls.

The Coalition has trailed Labor in the last 18 opinion polls conducted by Newspoll.

Mr Turnbull cited the Government's loss of 30 consecutive Newspolls when he challenged Tony Abbott for the top job in 2015.

At the time he said the Abbott government was heading for electoral defeat at the hands of the Labor party.

"The one thing that is clear about our current situation is the trajectory," Mr Turnbull said in 2015.

Speaking on the ABC's 7.30 program last night it was put to Mr Turnbull that his Government was now on the same trajectory.

"I disagree with that, we will win the next election," he said.

"I am very confident that we will win the next election."

Less than two hours later on Lateline the federal Liberal Party president Nick Greiner had a different take on Lateline.

"I don't in any way pretend that the Government are odds on favourites to win in 20 months' time," he said.

Mr Greiner was asked what would happen if Mr Turnbull reached 30 Newspoll defeats.

"Well, I have every hope and expectation that he won't but look it's apparent that the Government isn't doing as well in the polls as any of us would like," he said.

"The Coalition would like to be much better off in the polls."

The next federal election is due in 2019.
