Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull will be chairman of the Fortescue Future Industries venture. (AAP)

Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and ex-intelligence chief Nick Warner have been hired by businessman Andrew Forrest to drive a new clean energy venture.

Mr Forrest has been travelling the globe seeking projects to come under the banner of his Fortescue Future Industries venture.

Mr Turnbull will be chairman of FFI while Mr Warner - a former diplomat and director-general of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service - will be a special adviser for international affairs.

Mr Warner's main role will be working with foreign governments on developing "green hydrogen" projects.
