Turkish woman becomes second 107-year-old to beat coronavirus

A Turkish woman has become the second 107-year-old Covid-19 patient to recover from the illness.

Havahan Karadeniz was admitted to a hospital in Istanbul a week ago after experiencing a cough and a high fever - key symptoms of the virus.

But she beat the disease and was discharged on April 13, applauded by doctors and nurses as she was wheeled out of Istanbul Education Research Hospital.

The great-grandmother, thought to be one of the oldest patients in the world to recover from the virus, said: "The hospital was good and so was the personnel."

The best treatment for this virus is "isolation, staying at home and maintaining social distance," Dr. Ozgur Yigit, the chief physician of Istanbul Education and Research Hospital, told Anadolu Agency.

"Treatment for this disease is possible when you initiate appropriate treatments with the correct diagnoses," he said.

As of Tuesday, Turkey had 61,049 confirmed cases of Covid-19, while the death toll stood at 1,296.

Another 107-year-old, Dutch woman Cornelia Ras, also recovered from the virus last week, after falling sick on March 17, the day before her 107th birthday.

She fell ill after after attending a church service with other residents of her care home on Goeree-Overflakkee, an island in the southwest of the country, Dutch newspaper AD reported.

But she was told by her doctors last Monday that despite the odds against her, she had beaten the infection.

Originating in Wuhan, China, last December, Covid-19 has spread to most countries across the world, with its epicentre shifting to Europe.

Globally, there are nearly two million confirmed cases of the virus, and the number of deaths has passed 120,000.
