"The plane was harassed but the passenger safety was not jeopardised," said Haris Loizides. He added that the incident occurred about 35 miles west of Rhodes as flight 323 was on its way from Athens to Larnaca, Cyprus, at an altitude of 10,058m (33,000ft).
Mr Loizides said that about 10 minutes earlier a pair of military jets believed to be the same Turkish fighters had buzzed an Olympic Airways flight from Larnaca to Athens.
Turkish officials did not comment immediately.
Mr Loizides said that although similar incidents have occurred in the past, this was the first time that Turkish fighters had come so close to a Cypriot airliner.
Cyprus has been split into a Turkish-occupied north and a Greek Cypriot-controlled south since Turkey invaded the island in 1974.
The incident came only days after Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the former mayor of Istanbul who led Turkey's moderate Islamic party to victory in Sunday's election, appeared to offer a conciliatory hand to Greece, saying he was determined to build bridges . AP
