Turkey Twizzlers to return to supermarket shelves in 'healthier' new version

Turkey Twizzlers will be making a return to supermarket shelves later this week.

The controversial food snack was discontinued by Bernard Matthews in 2005 following what the company described as “negative press”.

Their demise came after a campaign - led by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver - called for them to be banned at school dinners amid claims that they were bad for children.

But it has now been confirmed that Turkey Twizzlers will make a return to shops for the first time in 15 years.

Bosses at Bernard Matthews say that the revived product will be “healthier and tastier than before” and will be available to buy in two flavours.

Chilli Cheese and the original Tangy Tomato version will be in stock at Iceland and other major retailers from August 20.

Fans can get their hands on the throwback products for £3 for a pack of eight Twizzlers.

Both flavours are said to contain 70% meat, which is a jump from the 34% inside the old version.

The “new and improved” Twizzlers are also lower in saturated fats and calories, according to the company.

A petition, which gathered more 30,000 signatures calling for their return, is said to be instrumental behind their comeback.

Nutritionist, Dr Sarah Schenker, said: “Turkey Twizzlers have listened to the public and completely transformed themselves into a much-improved product.

"They now have a nutritional profile they can be confident in. High in good quality protein and lower in fat, saturates, salt and sugar.

“You can create a balanced meal by teaming them with plenty of veg such as a corn on the cob and broccoli.”

And Bernard Matthews hasn’t ruled out a future return to school dinners.

David Leigh, the firm’s marketing director, told the BBC : “We have been discussing the return of the Twizzler for some time.

“Obviously we’d like the product to go into schools, but for the minute, we’ve focused on going into what I guess you’d call mass market retail.”
