'Turkey teeth' warning after UK dental clinic is 'inundated' with botched veneers

UK dental experts have warned people of the dangerous of travelling abroad to get their teeth done on the cheap.

The Harley Street Smile Clinic has estimated that the number of people who travelled to Turkey for dental veneers was around 300,000 in 2018.

Around 63 per cent of those people are believed to have been aged between 18 and 34-years-old. The cost of getting the procedure done in countries like Turkey is said to be around 70 per cent cheaper than getting veneers in the UK.

But the London-based dental clinic said that it has been ‘inundated’ with young people seeking to have their botched survey rectified.

Experts at The Harley Street Smile Clinic say that some clients have been suffering from severe infections, intense long lasting pain, infected gums or rotting teeth due to the procedure.

Clients also claim they have been misled by dental clinics abroad, with some being given crowns instead of veneers - which can result in a range of dental problems down the line.

The number of people travelling abroad to get their teeth done on the cheap has been on a rapid increase in recent months, with celebrities such as Katie Price, Jurgen Klopp and Kerry Katona sporting fake gnashers.

Dr Maurice Johanne, Principle Dentist at Harley Street Smile Clinic, said: “I can’t stress enough that people need to be 100 per cent clear about exactly what they are signing up for when they go abroad for cosmetic dental treatment.

“Although patients are under the impression they are having veneers, in reality they are having crowns placed, which means much more aggressive tooth reduction.”

Common symptoms after botched dental surgery:

  • Intense long-lasting pain
  • Overly sensitive teeth making it difficult to eat or drink
  • Exposed nerves, leading to further invasive treatments
  • Ill-fitting veneers can be too big or too small for the size of the mouth
  • Infected gums, which can spread to the sinuses and even to the bone if left untreated
  • Rotting teeth
  • Excessive swelling
  • Poorly bonded veneers can fall off easily

What you can do to ensure you’re seeing the right person about treatment:

  • Always thoroughly research the clinic, and the consultant doing the procedure before making any contact.
  • Don’t be afraid to call and ask to speak with your consultant to ensure that there is no language barrier and that communication is clear
  • Ask the right questions; what materials do they work with? What qualifications do they have? You can even go the next step and contact the issuing body to verify their claims
