Turkey-Syria earthquake: Alia Bhatt, Priyanka Chopra, Rajkummar Rao and other Bollywood stars pray for victims; say 'this is heartbreaking'

As a frantic race was underway to find more survivors and help the injured affected in the Turkey and Syria earthquake, Bollywood celebrities from Alia Bhatt to Priyanka Chopra, Rajkummar Rao to Shilpa Shetty took to social media to offer their prayers for those affected.

As the death toll from the devastating earthquake passed 5,000, and multiple aftershocks reportedly hampered the rescue efforts, celebs took to their handles to offer prayers for the survivors and also offered their heartfelt condolences to the families of victims.

The earthquake, which struck on Monday, flattened thousands of buildings in Turkey and neighbouring Syria. It was centred in Turkiye's southeastern province of Kahramanmaras and was felt as far away as Cairo. The earthquake was followed by multiple aftershocks.

Priyanka Chopra, who works closely with the UN, shared a news piece and wrote, “Devastating” along with a broken heart emoticon.

Alia Bhatt also shared a post and wrote, "This is heartbreaking."

Rajkummar Rao shared a post on his stories that read, "#Turkey #Syria you are in our prayers (sic)."

Check out what other stars had to say:

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 afflicted provinces, which would facilitate the management of the emergency response. The country's Interior Ministry said it was assessing requests for help made through social media postings and relaying the information to rescue teams.

Many people have gone on social media to call for assistance for loved ones believed trapped following the quake. There were a few unconfirmed reports of victims requesting help from beneath the rubble.
