Turkey hopes for last-minute red list reprieve in bid to rescue holiday season

Travel experts are calling for Turkey to be removed from the red list of destinations for UK holidaymakers - potentially opening up a last-minute rush to the sun.

If the popular tourist destination is moved to amber status it will mean visitors to Turkey will not have to quarantine on return to the UK. Tour operators and airlines, such as TUI, Jet2, Ryanair and easyJet were among the UK firms flying to Turkish resorts before the pandemic.

The next review for the UK Government traffic light system is expected on either September 15 or 16.

If changes are not confirmed in that updates it is unlikely there will be any time to introduce travel to Turkish resorts before the end of the summer season.

Turkey was placed in the red category 16 weeks ago, but the travel industry feels its Covid data suggests that restrictions should be eased.

Paul Charles, founder of The PC Agency, posted on social media that Turkey was safer than Cornwall and deserved a move to the amber category.

Data specialist Ben McCluskey added: "There is little justification for Turkey to remain on the red list given there are amber-listed countries with a higher seven-day incidence rate, such as France and Greece.

"Although the country’s place on the red list may have previously been justified, given the questions around credibility of Turkey’s data last summer and lack of genomic sequencing, it is no longer justified."

Analyst Tim White said he expected Turkey to be be removed from the red list in the next review.
