Turkey holiday tourists are being charged £43 for kebabs and £62 if they want to use a private beach.
A shocked customer shared a picture of their Bodrum beach bar receipt on social media which showed that they also had been charged £7.30 for a small coffee and £22 for some pitta bread.
At the nearby Maçakızı Hotel non-guests are asked to spend a minimum of £62 against food, drink and activities at the private hotel to be able to use the beach.
The minimum spend was already in place before the pandemic.
Bodrum Mayor Ahmet Aras defended local charges saying that the businesses were just trying to survive after the coronavirus pandemic.
He said the city is 'responsible for taking whatever it can from the pockets of tourists to the last penny'.
He said: “I don’t care if someone wants to pay a high price for a doner kebab. They can pay TL 100,000 if they want. But there are also places selling döner for TL 20 (about $3) here.
"Businesses here are already taking a hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"They can't make ends meet...of course, that doesn't mean that they have to overcharge their customers.”
The UK government will announce this week a full list of countries that will will make up a travel traffic light system and Turkey could be on it.
It will decide which nations are safe to travel to, with those classed as green or amber available to holidaymakers.
Britons holidaying in “green” or “amber” countries will not have to self-isolate for 14 days when they get back.
But people returning from countries in the 'red' zone would need to self-isolate.
