Turkish Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca said on Wednesday that Turkey is at the peak point of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Speaking at a press conference, Koca said death rate in the country dropped for intensive care patients from 58% to 10%, while death rate for intubated patients decreased from 74% to 14.

He said at least 7,428 healthcare workers have been infected with COVID-19, nearly 6.5% of all cases.

Koca said earlier he did not expect a second virus wave if measures against the outbreak were followed.

Also, Health Ministry data showed on Wednesday that number of people who have died from the pandemic in Turkey has risen by 89 in the last 24 hours reaching 3,081.

The total number of cases rose by 2,936 to 117,589, the data showed, the highest total outside Western Europe or the United States, Reuters reported.

A total of 44,022 people have so far recovered from the virus, while the number of tests carried out in the past 24 hours was 43,498, higher than in previous days.

For its part, the Turkish Minister of National Education announced extending closure of schools until at least May 31, noting that remote education will continue until that date.

In March, Turkey closed educational institutions across the country and introduced distance learning as an early precaution to halt the spread of the coronavirus, five days after it confirmed the nation’s first case of the virus.
