Turkey eyes amber list upgrade as Covid cases fall - raising hopes for UK visitors

Tourism officials in Turkey are desperate for the country to be moved from the UK government red list of travel destinations in the next review of restrictions.

Turkey's daily infection rate per 100,000 people is dropping fast as vaccination rates increase, lockdown measures work and Covid safety protocols prove effective.

Its daily infection rate is similar to Greece and France and better than Spain and Portugal, so it is expecting to be moved to the UK's amber list by the end of this month.

Vaccinations are also increasing with almost 41 million doses now administered with 25.9 million people receiving one dose and in excess of 14 million receiving two jabs.

If the nation is upgraded to amber status, it opens up the country for UK holidaymakers who are willing to comply with travel restrictions.

All arrivals into Turkey, must complete an online Traveller Entry Form up to 72 hours before travel, with UK arrivals required to produce a negative PCR test result.

Currently, all UK visitors to Turkey have to quarantine in a government-approved hotel for 10 days at their own expense, pre-departure testing and mandatory PCR testing on day two and eight.

Amber arrivals need to self-isolate for 10 days and take a pre-departure test, as well as a PCR test on day two and day eight. There is an option to take an additional test on day five to end self-isolation early

Turkey’s cases have fallen significantly since a second peak on April 20, when it recorded more than 60,000 infections in a single day.

By June 21, there were 5,294 new cases, and the decline has led Turkey’s President Erdoğan to announce that curfew and some travel restrictions will be dropped on July 1.

He said: “Our goal is to make everybody in our nation over age 18 eligible for vaccination within a few weeks."
