The Libyan parliament's passing of a no-confidence vote in the unity government will not contribute to Libya’s stability nor its transitional process, the Turkish foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
In a statement, the ministry underlined that it is vital that the unity government stays at its post until the elections in order to have a well-managed transition period.
“All parties in Libya must leave aside their personal interest struggles as well as unproductive discussions on legitimacy at this critical point and focus on Libya’s priorities with a sense of responsibility,” it said.
The ministry further vowed to continue to support the legitimate Libyan administration as well as the Libyan people while continuing to defend the UN-facilitated political process.
During the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey supports the Libyan government’s efforts to achieve stability and to hold the elections on schedule.
The Libyan parliament passed a vote of no confidence in the unity government chaired by Abdul Hamid Mohammed Dbeibah this week.
The High Council of State has rejected the withdrawal of confidence as its spokesman said such a decision is invalid and violates the constitutional declaration and political agreement.
Turkey insists on keeping its forces in Libya and refuses to consider them as foreign forces.
Turkey is also procrastinating the withdrawal of Syrian mercenaries despite international calls on the pullout of foreign forces before the elections.
