Gezi Park, Friday morning 31.5.13: taken a moment after the unprovoked teargas attack by the police on a quite small group of protesters who were on the edge of the part of Gezi Park across the road (not blocking it in any way) from the part which had been barricaded off after Thursday's police attack on the Occupy camp; note how the protesters look - this was before the protest had become anything resembling a mass protest, but was the trigger for the call - mostly via Twitter - to mass protestPhotograph: Nick HobbsWhen there's no police, there's peace: June 1st, afternoon, in Taksim square, an estimated number of 1 million of people singing Bella Ciao with peace signs Photograph: Idil AkdöşSaturday early evening June 1st: teargas bombs falling from the sky and panicking demonstrators Photograph: Nick Hobbs

Similar rallies have been held here each evening since Friday. Ayvalik is a small town of only about 40,000 people and a few hundred attended. The passing bus, dolmus and taxi drivers showed their encouragement by hooting. We are all concerned about the violence shown by police elsewhere in Turkey. This picture, sent in by Seda Ilter, is of Ziya Azazi, an acclaimed dancer and choreographer, in Istanbul who is dancing with his mask on. The protests would have been entirely peaceful, if it had not been the police violence. What a shame it is not to have democracy!
