Turkish police on Monday arrested a Syrian national who entered the country illegally and was carrying explosives to carry out a terrorist attack in Mardin, security sources said,

Police arrested the man who illegally entered the country carrying explosives to use in the attack.

In a statement, Mardin police said the suspect was held in the Kiziltepe district. He was later remanded into police custody.

Around 2 kg of explosives camouflaged in a plaster-like form on the suspect's left arm, and concealed in a shampoo bottle in the backpack were also seized.

Last week, Turkey launched extensive military and police operations during which it arrested more than 60 foreign ISIS members, including 11 Iraqis.

Turkey recognized ISIS as a terrorist group in 2013, and since then, the country has been attacked numerous times.

Since 2015, ISIS has assumed its responsibility of carrying in Turkey at least ten suicide bombings, seven bombings and four armed attacks, which killed 315 people and injured hundreds others.

Last Saturday, Turkish authorities identified two ISIS terrorists, who were arrested in an operation in Turkey, a security source said.

Turkish security services have been carrying out ongoing campaigns against the organizations’ cells, arresting more than 5,000 of its members.

Over the past five years, more than 3,000 others have been deported.

Turkey launched the campaign to deport foreign fighters in November 2019, after the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a US raid in Idlib earlier in October.
