Turf Lodge street changes go out to consultation

Changes to two streets in West Belfast are to go out to public consultation after a campaign by local residents.

The Department for Infrastructure is looking at the potential for installing a one-way system at both Monagh Crescent and Norglen Crescent in Turf Lodge.

Sinn Fein councillor Micheal Donnelly told Belfast Live the community had been campaigning around the issues for a number of years.

He said: "It was first brought to my attention before 2017 and between myself and the Upper Springfield Whiterock Integrated Partnership we've embarked upon a lobbying campaign to get a number of streets within the Upper Springfield area to be turned into one-way systems.

"The first success we had was in May 2019 where we got New Barnsley Crescent turned into a one-way street.

"It resolved a lot of issues. These included people having to reverse around the corner because of oncoming traffic, very narrow streets and we've had ongoing issues of bin lorries and emergency vehicles not being able to get into streets because of how people are parked.

"So it's great to see that it's been resolved at New Barnsley Crescent and there haven't been any issues since it came into existence. Bins haven't been missed and there's been a steady flow of traffic."

Councillor Donnelly described the latest development as a "great victory" for the community.

He said: "I'm glad to see that the Department for Infrastructure have taken on local residents concerns and they're now looking at actively looking at putting one-way systems in Monagh Crescent and Norglen Crescent.

"It's great to see, it was a big issue when we went to the doors so there are a lot of people who are delighted to see this could be a reality. The feedback I've got from residents on these streets is that they're looking forward to it.

"The impact will be: Knowing that your bins are getting emptied on a regular basis, there's no concerns about emergency vehicles getting into the street, there'll be less traffic in the street - people just want to live on a street with easy access in and out.

"And this is what this could deliver."
