Turbo Island fenced off but plans for controversial patch of land still unknown

The future of a controversial piece of land in Bristol is still unknown, despite fencing being put up around the site, months after the council said they wanted to see improvements.

Turbo Island, in Stokes Croft, is considered a staple of Bristol’s identity where people can often be found until the early hours, often under the influence of alcohol.

It's currently owned by an advertising company, but last year it was announced the fate of Turbo Island may rest with Bristol City Council.

Since then there have been no updates in terms of what the future holds for the space or whether further conversations have taken place.

What happened in September?

What is Turbo island?

In September council chiefs were consulting with local residents about looking into what could be done with Turbo Island.

Residents involved told Bristol Live the council’s ideas included working with the owner of the space to pave Turbo Island over and install benches and bicycle racks.

An employee from Take Five Café opposite Turbo Island, believes the space should be re-purposed and put to good use to benefit the wider community.

He said: “If they make it look nicer by adding some grass, flower beds and fencing it would do a world of good because it’s just a mud patch at the moment.

“They should make it look like a nice park area, as by doing so it would also reduce the mess and noise pollution which is currently produced in the area due to Turbo Island.

“An even better idea would be to re-purpose it and put a little soup kitchen there or an outreach centre for the homeless, as it is already a gathering point for many.

“You may as well re-purpose it for people who already go there.”

A number of options were being explored for the future, but no final decisions had been made and the landowner had not yet been approached. Since then there has been no further update on the plans.

There is currently fencing around the front of Turbo Island, but as far as Bristol Live understands there is no connection between this and the work the council wish to carry.

Currently, as it stands neither Bristol City Council or Clear View have provided a statement about the future of Turbo Island, after being approached by Bristol Live.
