Tunnock’s legend gets police escort after one-way street blunder – and gives cops Caramel Wafers for their trouble

Biscuit tycoon Sir Boyd Tunnock was given a police escort after getting lost on the way to a radio interview – and rewarded the cops with his firm’s treats.

The confectionery boss was heading to Go Radio’s studios in Glasgow’s Gorbals yesterday for a chat when he took a wrong turn in his Smart car and ended up facing oncoming traffic.

A police car arrived with sirens blaring and he was asked where he was going.

Embarrassed Sir Boyd, 88, admitted he was lost and officers then told him to follow them.

The Tunnock’s supremo revealed his traffic mishap when he finally got to the studio and joined the Go Radio Business Show with business gurus Sir Tom Hunter and Lord Willie Haughey.

He said: “I turned left under a bridge and pulled in to the side of the road to see where I was.

“There were cars coming the other way flashing their lights. Then I heard this ‘nee-naw, nee-naw’ and a police car was alongside me. They said, ‘You’re going the wrong way’. I said, ‘I know, I’m lost.’ They then
said, ‘Just turn the car and follow us.’

“The police were very helpful so I gave them a packet of Caramel Wafers to help them on their way.

“I stopped rally driving in 1962 and I’m not very good at reading maps.”
