Tunnel to close for 'prolonged period' in £11m project

One of the Mersey Tunnels will be closed for a "prolonged period" as workers begin a £11m project.

Merseytravel said the Queensway Tunnel will be shut to drivers for a "prolonged period" from Monday, June 5. The travel company said it's part of an £11m project to upgrade a range of major equipment.

One of the major upgrades included replacing the current tunnel lighting with an energy efficient LED system. Merseytravel told its customers of the closure over email on Thursday, May 25.

The email read: "I'm writing to inform you about a major upgrade at Queensway Tunnel and to advise you of the tunnel opening hours to enable this investment to take place so that you can plan your journeys. We are about to begin an £11m project to upgrade a range of major electrical equipment, including replacing the current lighting with an energy efficient LED system.

"This means that from Monday, June 5, 2023, the Queensway Tunnel will remain open during the day but will close every night between 21:00 hours and 06:30 hours to allow us to undertake these works. The closures will be over seven days a week and are expected to last over a prolonged period of time to allow this investment in the Tunnel.

"We are undertaking these works at night to minimise impact for our customers, at a time when the volume of vehicles using the Tunnels are at their lowest. Customers who use the Queensway tunnel overnight can use the Kingsway (Wallasey) Tunnel which will remain open throughout.

"This should minimise any disruption to the travelling public. The extent of these works means that we are unable to carry them out safely with the Tunnel open and by closing every night allows us to undertake these works as quickly and as efficiently as possible – whilst also ensuring our message to our customers is as clear as possible."

MerseyTravel said there will be some minor exceptions to the closure arrangements.

They added: "For example, we reserve the right to delay the closure to allow people to travel home from events such as a night time football fixture involving Everton or Liverpool playing at home or a major event in the city – but otherwise, for 7 days a week, Queensway will close at 21:30 hours and re-open at 06:30 the following morning."
