Tunisia Rules Out Nationwide Lockdown

Tunisian Prime Minister Hisham Al-Mashishi excluded the possibility of imposing a nationwide lockdown despite the spike in COVID-19 cases.

“It is not possible to impose a general lockdown in Tunisia because of the socio-economic difficulties,” Mashishi was quoted as saying.

Underscoring the need to respect the health protocol, especially social distancing and wearing masks, Mashishi called on all Tunisians to register on the EVAX platform to receive vaccine jabs.

Tunisia fell behind in offering the first dose of the vaccine (on March 13), and so far, only 100,000 Tunisians were vaccinated. Further, up to one million Tunisians registered on the platform.

Tunisian Health Ministry on April 5 reported 1,866 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections in the country to 263,043, while the death toll from the virus rose by 46 to 9,039

The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the country reached 1,664, including 374 in intensive care units, while the total number of recoveries reached 220,645, it added.
