Director-General of Health Faisal Ben Salah has stated that 875,000 Tunisians have been asked to take the coronavirus vaccine on the sixth day of a huge free inoculation campaign that will be held on Sunday.

He urged Tunisians to take the vaccine to allow authorities to reach their target of inoculating half of the population, or 6 million people, by the end of October.

The number of fully vaccinated people stands at 3,324,088 whereby 2,568,171 received two doses, 337,513 received one shot of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson, and a further 418,404 people, who have been infected by the virus, have received one jab.

The figures are far below the expectations of the Health Ministry. Moreover, thousands of people who have registered to receive the vaccine have failed to show up to their appointments.

Some 6.2 million people have registered on the official platform, but failure to show up to appointments has alarmed authorities.

Tunisia has reported over 703,000 virus infections, 24,676 deaths and over 671,000 recoveries.
