Tune in and turn up to community radio station fun day

A community radio station run by volunteers is organising a family fun day on Sunday.

Johnstone Sound is a non-profit community group which has been broadcasting online across the town since April 2019.

Staffed by a group of 15 dedicated volunteers who all broadcast from the own homes, the station aims to be a voice for the town.

And thanks to funding from the National Lottery, they’ve put together a fantastic family fun day which will be held in Houstoun Square from 12noon till 4pm on Sunday.

As well as live broadcasts from the bandstand, there will be facepainting, two vintage fire engines, live music from Zoe Tait The Ladybugg, Adam Dolan, Shaun Hamilton as Elvis and a performances from Ashley Gardner Dance School.

Volunteer Kevin McLaughlin said: “We are all volunteers doing various jobs, everyone mucks in.

“The station was set up by Alex Kerr and Andy McCrory.

“We want to raise awareness of the station and let people know it’s there and what we do.

“At the moment its online and the plan eventually is to be a digital station.

“We kept going right through lockdown.

“We’ve been supported by Arnold Clark and the National Lottery has given us some funds as well to help put on this day.”

Sunday’s event is the first one the station has put on but they’re hoping it’ll be a success and lead to more.

The station broadcasts a wide selection of music, news and community radio productions, including live Sunday Mass service from St Margaret’s Church, and live local football.

Kevin said he’s loved being involved and they’re hoping to get more people on board to volunteer to keep the station going.

He said: “I was scrolling through Facebook last year and came across Johnstone Sound so I emailed them. I initially thought I would do some fundraising as I’ve done some charity events in the past.

“I like music and I’ve also done some radio work before and I’m a Johnstone boy, born and bred here. I wanted to help so I present a show now and am on the committee.

“I wanted to do something for the community. I’ve really enjoyed it so far, it’s been absolutely brilliant.”

“We’ve got a lot of followers but we’re still looking for presenters for morning or afternoon shows."

The event will run from noon till 4pm this Sunday and all are welcome to attend.
