Tumblr to ban all pornographic content

Tumblr was removed from Apple's App Store over content on the platform.

Social media networking site Tumblr has announced that from December 17 all "adult content" will no longer be permitted on the site.

The move comes weeks after the app was delisted from the Apple App Store over concerns of child pornography.

Tumblr has already begun flagging existing content, removing as much as it can.

It will now rely on automated tools to identify pornographic content and email members if their posts are flagged.

The new updated community guidelines on the company's website say: "Don't upload images, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples — this includes content that is so photorealistic that it could be mistaken for featuring real-life humans (nice try, though)."

Tumblr's chief Jeff D'Onofrio stated in a blog post that "we know there will be mistakes, but we've done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community".

"Most importantly, we're going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions we're making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.

"Our actions are out of love and hope for our community."

Differing views on the ban

Tumblr's move has sparked a variety of views from users — some arguing there are far worse things that can be accessed on the app than nudity.
