Tulip could still bloom in City as appeal begins

The backers of the planned Tulip tower in the City have started an appeal against Sadiq Khan’s decision to block it.

The move by architects Foster + Partners and developer Jacob J Safra means the proposal will go to a planning inquiry likely to take place this summer.

The plans for the 300-metre-high viewing platform and “classroom in the sky” were approved by the City of London Corporation in April but fell foul of City Hall in July.

The Mayor rejected the design as it was not a piece of “world-class architecture” and would give “very limited public benefit” to London.

But Mr Safra today said it would offer “significant public benefits”.
