TUI store closures - what it means if you already have a holiday booked

Holiday giant Tui is preparing to axe 166 high street stores as part of a huge cost cutting drive that will expand the company online.

On Thursday, bosses said 900 roles are at risk as part of a company-wide restructuring that will cut its overheads by 30% in the coming weeks.

Tui said outlets will close in the UK and Republic of Ireland as part of plans to expand digitally, though 330 high street stores will continue to trade.

The new model will result in a bigger "homeworking sales and service team".

"The decision was made following changes in customer behaviour. Customers value the personal service and support TUI travel advisors offer; the business is looking to move 70% of the 900 impacted roles into the new homeworking sales and service team," a statement said.

"We want to be in the best position to provide excellent customer service, whether it's in a high street store, over the telephone or online, and will continue to put the customer at the heart of what we do," managing director Andrew Flintham added.

"It is therefore imperative that we make these difficult cost decisions, look after our colleagues during such unprecedented uncertainty and also offer a modern customer service."

So what does it mean if you already have a holiday booked?

Tui told Mirror Money the store closures will not affect anyone with an outstanding booking.

It said all trips will continue to go ahead in line the FCO's guidance.

It added that the move will result in an increased presence online, with staff moving to permanent homeworking to manage bookings and better serve customers.

"Customer behaviours have already changed in recent years, with 70% of all Tui UK bookings taking place online," Flintham added.

"We believe Covid-19 has only accelerated this change in purchasing habits, with people looking to buy online or wishing to speak with travel experts from the comfort of their own home.

"We have world-class travel advisers at Tui, so we hope many of them will become homeworkers and continue to offer the personalised service we know our customers value."
